\\ KM01
The brief for KM01 House was to design a small contemporary cottage located on a little plot of land in sub-saharan africa. Arranged within a compact footprint, the more private spaces (bedrooms and bathroom) are to the rear of the house; with the open plan living room and kitchen to the front, leading on to the sheltered south facing veranda.
The house is designed to utilise it's thermal mass to naturally stabilise the internal temperature throughout the year. During warm weather, much of the heat gain is absorbed by the exposed thermal mass in the floors and walls, helping prevent an excessive temperature rise and reducing the risk of overheating. During the winter this heat gain is then slowly released overnight as the temperature drops, helping to keep the building warm and reducing the need for supplementary heating.
